Title | Referee's report by Otto Heinrich Warburg, on a paper 'The metabolism of the eggs of Psammechinus miliaris during the fertilization reaction' by H Laser and Lionel Walter Rothschild |
Date | September 1938 |
Description | Sectional committee: Zoology
Recommended for publication in Proceedings.
Criticism given in German, roughly translated as "The main result is the special metabolism of the egg in the five minutes after fertilization. Since the egg is now very acidic which expels CO2 from the bicarbonate of the seawater, simultaneous manometric measurement of the (relatively small) oxygen consumption is very difficult. I find it possible that the effect (compare line figure 2) would disappear if the method were perfected. Can you replace the bicardonate-carbonic acid buffer with another buffer (such as pyrophosphate buffer?) Then potassium hydroxide solution could be used and everything became methodologically much easier. If the result is the same under such simpler conditions, it is worth publication in the Proceedings."
