Career: Apprenticed at the Elswick shipyard of Armstrong, Whitworth & Co (1880s); naval architect at the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, at Govan, Glasgow (1898); returned to Armstrong, Whitworth & Co (1902); undertook consultancy work for the Turkish government, reporting on the conditions of its navy, earning the Order of the Medjide (third class) (1904); director of naval construction with the Royal Navy, where he pioneered new forms of shipbuilding (1912); Chairman of the Landship Committee, a collaborative assembly of engineers and officers for the purpose of designing a vehicle capable of crossing No Man’s Land (1915); resigned from the Admiralty (1924); rejoined Armstrong, Whitworth & Co (1924); joined the board of Parsons Marine Steam Turbine Company (1928-1948); retired to Carters Corner Farm, near Halisham, Sussex (1948).
