Activity | Career: Joined the Royal Artillery, becoming Quarter-Master and Honorary Second Lieutenant (1885); joined the staff of Sir W. G.Armstrong, Whitworth & Co., Ltd., at Elswick Works, Newcastle-on-Tyne (1889) where he held positions of Proof Officer, Head of the Inspection Department, and Manager of the Gun Shops, and owing to his technical expertise assumed responsibility for the design and development of guns, gun mountings, shells, andfuzes, both for military and naval ordnance; Volunteer Officer Captain in the 1st Northumberland Artillery Volunteers (1889); Major commanding the 1st Northumberlad Battery (1898); Lieutenant Colonel commanding the 1st Northumberland R.G.A (1910-14); Military Member of the Northumberland Territorial Force Association Committee (1910-19); upon the death of Sir Andrew Noble, elected to the Board of Sir W.G. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co., Ltd. (1915); later becoming Managing Director of Elswick Works; director of the new firm of Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd., and when Vickers Limited acquired the capital of Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd, he was on the Board as Technical Consultant, holding the position until his death.
