Master at Radley College and Wellington college (c 1859); ordained into the Church of England (1859); fellow at Worcester College (1860-1868); tutor (865-7); vice provost (1865); dean (1866); resigned his fellowship (1866); tutor in Reigate where he began his natural history studies(1863); moved to Torquay (1867); continued his career as a tutor and schoolmaster and pursued writing on Darwinism; began studying crustacea and writing papers on the subject, which became his specialism (1873); moved to Tunbridge Wells (1877).
