Joined editorial staff in compiling reports of the Challenger, including monaxonid sponges (1885); employed to the British Museum, Natural History (1886); demonstrator and assistant lecturer at the University of Melbourne (1888); identified and described almost two thousand specimens of sponges as part of the Por Phillip Biological Survey by the Royal Society of Victori (1887); professor of biology at Canterbury College, University of New Zealand (1893); professor of biology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa (1903); professor of zoology at King’s College, London (1905); died following an operation for chronic appendicitis (1925).
