General contextCroke is reported as having shown a keen interest in natural philosophy and gardening, in particular regarding exotic plants. According to Ward, he was the first person to bring the plane tree to England. With Oldenburg, Croke corresponded on topics such as mercury hourglasses, telescopes, and the longitude problem. After Croke's death, the Waterstock Estate passed to Sir Henry Ashhurst, baronet.
