Employed at his father’s firm of Thomas de la Rue and Co but pursued his interest in chemical and electrical research (1836-1848); went to Spain with the Himalays Expedition where he obtained a series of photographs of the total eclipse of the sun 18 July (1860); retired from the family business (1870); established a private physical laboratory, where in collaboration with Dr Hugo Muller, he carried out elaborate research on the electrical discharge (1874); member of the Consulting Council of the Electrical Exhibition held at the Crystal Palace, Sydenham (1882); died of pneumonia (1889).
