Studied with Wilhelm Blaschke in Hamburg (1934-1946); worked with Elie Cartan in Paris for one year; returned to China (1937), his university had moved to Kunming; Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1943); returned to China after WW2 to set up Institute of Mathematics as part of Academia Sinica in Nanjing; returned to USA (1948), moved to Chicago (1949), moved to Berkeley (1960), retired (1979); founder of national Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, director (1981-1984); set up Nankai Institute for Mathematics in China (1985); awarded US National Medal of Science (1975); Wolf Prize in Mathematics (1983); Chern Visiting Professors, University of California, Berkeley.
