Activity | Education: Won scholarship to Hanley High School; North Manchester Grammar School, from where he was the first pupil to win a Cambridge scholarship to Trinity College Career: First Degree 1935, Ph.D in 1939; most time spent in Cavendish laboratories , where his mentor was Ernest Rutherford. Served as a senior scientific officer to the Air Ministry, Ministry of Aircraft Production and ministry of Supply.; UK-USA liaison officer posted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology radiation laboratory. Returned to Cambridge (1946) as university lecturer and Fellow and Director of Studies at Trinity College. Most of his time spent on linear accelerator in the Cavendish. Appointed Professor of Physics at Imperial College 91950); Langworthy Professor of Physics and director of the physical laboratories (19550; sabbatical at Columbia University, New York (1959) and accepted a professorship there (1960). Chairman of Columbia's physics department (1963-1967) and director of physics laboratory at Columbia's Barnard College. |
