General contextNot much is known about Allen's personal life or in further detail about his medical practice. Dr Richard Myddelton Massey's (FRS 1712) recorded in his manuscript additions to Pharm. Lond. that Allen refused to make the first blood transfusion experiment on a patient at Bethlem Hospital, despite the experiment being approved of by the Royal Society.
