OtherInfoPrior to succeeding his father as Earl of Clarendon in 1674, Hyde was known as Viscount Cornbury. Whilst in exile with his parents after the end of the Civil War, his father used Hyde as a copyist and decipherer for his confidential correspondence with other royalists in a similar situation. After the ascension of William to the throne in 1688, Clarendon spent much of his life in seclusion.
