Joined the Scottish Branch of HM Geological Survey as an assistant, becoming an apprentice to Benjamin Neeve Peach (FRS 1892) and eventually lifelong scientific partnership(1867); involved in mapping the Central Lowlands; his and Peach’s approach led them to resolve the “Highlands Controversy” with the publication of “The Geological Structure of the North-West Highlands of Scotland”, closely followed by their “Northwest Highlands Memoir” (1907); Director of the Scottish Branch of the Survey (1901-1911).ards/Medals:
