General context | Expert in nautical navigation and surveying, hydrographical engineering and improvement of commercial ports including Liverpool, Swansea and bideford. Best known for his command of the surveying expedition of the HMS 'Torch' and HMS 'Herlad' in the Pacific from 1852-1860, resulting in much improved charts of the area and for which he was knighted in 1867. Advised the New South Wales Government during the Russian War of 1854-1855. Executed several commissions for the Lords Committee of the Privy Council for Trade. |
