Demonstrator for Leonard Hill (FRS 1900) at the London Hospital Medical College (1905); studied under Karl Pearson (FRS 1896); appointed statistician to the Lister Institute (1910); served in the Royal Army Medical Corps, later in charge of a medical research unit at the Ministry of Munitions (1914-1918); joined the Ministry of Health, responsible for medical statistics (1919); professor of Epidemlogy and Vital Statistics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (1928-1945).
