Title | Letter from Clements R [Robert] Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 28 April 1903 |
Description | Encloing a telegram [see CD/115/2] concerning the 'Morning' being separated from the 'Discovery' by five miles of ice at the time of its departure, and has informed William Huggins of the same. It is certain that Captain [Robert Falcon] Scott will be wintering a second time, and there will be a 'terrible catastrophe' if relief is not sent. The Government may refuse to help, as they did not provide assistance with the relief ship last year, and Markham points out that collecting private subscriptions is 'slow work'.
With a postscript note, pointing out that the remaining £3,300 [in the Antarctic fund] is for wages and allotments and will run out in April 1904. [Captain William] Colbeck has been sent £500 but will need more to cover the expenses of the 'Morning'. |
