Title | Paper, 'A short dissertation concerning the child's crying in the womb' by W [William] Derham |
Date | [1709] |
Description | Derham's follow-up paper on a case of a child crying from within the womb addresses questions posed by others about the feasibility of the matter. Derham provides further anecdotes of individuals who had heard the infant crying energetically whilst still in utero, all of whom insisted that it was not the sound of the mother's 'guts' but rather that of a child. He also insists that there was a palpable respiration-like movement in the woman's belly when the crying sound was emitted. He then goes on to provide further similar anecdotes from 'learned persons'.
