' The Minutes of the last Council were read and The following new Members of the Council were sworn viz Mr Peel, Mr Bell, Mr Brown, Mr Chantrey; Mr Faraday, Mr HAtchett, Mr Warburton.
Resolved, That the Committee of inquiry into the best Method of procuring glass for Official purposes, consisting of the following gentlemen, be re-appointed - viz The President and Secretaries, Mr Baily, Captain Beaufort, Colonel Colby, Mr Dollond, Mr Faraday, Mr Hatchett, Captain Kater, Mr Pepys, Mr Pond, Mr South, Mr WArburton, Dr Wollaston, Dr Goring, Mr Herschel
Resolved, That the Meteorological Committee be re-appointed.
Resolved, That the Committee for examining Papers presented to the Society, previously to their being read at the Meetings, consisting of the President, the Secretaries, Mr Herschel, Dr Wollaston, and Dr Young, be re-appointed. '

'It was also intimated to the Council that the President had made a Donation of £1000 three per cent Consolidated annuities to the Royal Society for purposes similar to those of Dr Wollaston's bequest. Resolved, That a notification of the above Donations be sent to each of the Members.
The following Communicatin was read fromn Dr Wollaston. -
No 1 Dorset Street, December 7th 1828
Dr Wollaston has desired that a quantity of Palladium be presented to the President and Council of the Royal Society, requesting of them the favor, that they and their Successors will act as his Trustees in distributing from time to time such portions of the Palldium as they may think propoer to such Authors of Chemical Papers, which either have been, or here after may be, read to the Society, as may appear to the President and Council deserving of such reward. He empowers them also , should they see occasion, to use and distribute a part of the Palladium in aid of chemical experiments on the said Metal.
I have added three Ingots of douoble refined Platina, to be applied to any scientific purpose to which the President and Council may think proper to devote them. (Signed) Wm H Wollaston
Resolved that Captain Sabine be requested to measure the length of the Second Pendulum at Greenwich by Captain Kater's Convertible Pendulum employed in a Vacuum.
Dr Wollaston presented to the Council, for the Society, an Autograph Letter of Sir Isaac Newton.
A Letter was communicated, addressed to Dr Young, from A F Gardiner, Commander, R.N., soliciting the influence of the Society with Government to furnish him wioth the means for undertaking a journey of discovery into the interior of New South Wales.
A Letter was read from Mr Bontemps to Captain Kater stating the terms on which he was willing to disclose the process employed by Mr Guinand in the manufacture of Glass for Optical purposes : accompanied by two specimens of Glass.
Resolved, That the Glass Committee be requested to examine these specimens, and to report to the Council their opinion of their qualities. ' |
