DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; Robert Brown; Samuel Hunter Christie; Sir James Clark; Sir Henry De La Beche; John Gassiot; Thomas Graham; William Hopkins; Sir Robert Harry Inglis; Charles Lyell; Dr Peter Roget; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sabine; the President [Spencer Compton] Marquis of Northampton in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: motion of de la Beche and Lyell to limit the term of the President to no more than two successive years was withdrawn. Selection of Foreign Members deferred. Recommendations of the Finance Committee regarding increased space for the Society's meetings at Somerset House are to request use of rooms of the Society of Antiquaries and the University of London. Nathaniel Wallich's request for back issues of Philosophical Transactions denied in accordance with the statutes. Letter from Henry George Ward of the Admiralty informing the Society that James Dunlop has resigned his position as astronomer at Paramatta [Parramatta], Australia and asking whether the volumes of his observations should be deposited with the Society [letter reproduced in minutes]. Secure boxes to be provided to the standing scientific committees for storage of documents. Robert Warrington applied for grant of a copy of future volumes of the Philosophical Transaction for the Chemical Society of London. John Higginbottom granted permission to make a copy of his paper on the British Triton, deposited in the archive. Letter from Charles Piazzi Smyth of the Royal Observatory Edinburgh regarding the standing arrangemenet for distribution of Edinburgh observations by the Royal Society along with the Greenwich observations [letter reproduced in full in minutes].
