| Description | Printed minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.
Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; William Bowman; Sir Benjamin Brodie; Charles Brooke;Samuel Hunter Christie; Dr William Clark; Dr Charles Daubeny; Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton; John Gassiot; Sir John Frederick William Herschel; Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Portlock; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sabine; Captain William Henry Smyth; Edward Solly; William Spence; Dr Nathaniel Wallich; the President [William Parsons] Earl of Rosse in the chair.
Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. In order for scientific works to be received duty free into the UK, Thomas Freemantle of the Treasury requires a list of likely recipients, a Committee appointed to prepare the list and nominated committee members' names given. Report of the Committee appointed to revise the terms of printing the 'Philosophical Transactions' presented to Council [report reproduced in minutes]. Society to request that the Admiralty pay the expenses for the printing of Captain Frederick Beechey's paper on Tides. A letter from the Astronomer Royal, George Biddell Airy, dated 31 Jan 1852, regarding Beechey's tidal observations. Airy praises the quality and importance of Beechey's work, he suggests that observation be further extended in the North Sea and asks the Society to petition the Government for use of a vessel [letter reproduced in full in minutes]. Candidates for Foreign Member to be considered at the next meeting. Charles Wheatstone granted permission to have impressions taken of the plates for his paper on binocular vision published in 'Philosophical Transactions'. An estimate to be obtained for publishing Richard Owen's description of the Megatherium in the 'Philosophical Transactions' and the Government asked to provide the funds. Brooke to be given a slip of the palladium given to the Royal Society by William Hyde Wollaston, for the purpose of compensating the balance of a self-registering magnetic apparatus. Augustus Waller given an extension to the period allowed for his official admission to the Society. Bills for printing (Mr Taylor), engraving (Messrs Basire and Walker) and binding (Mr Gyde) ordered to be paid to named suppliers.
