Among matters discussed or noted:
1. Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved. 2. Death of the Very Reverend Dean Farrar: Sir Michael Foster reported that he had attended the funeral and acted as a pall-bearer. 3. Senior Sercreatry reported that it had proved impossible to arrange a date for the Prince of Wales to attend a dinner. 4. Letter from Sir Clements Markham, 31 March 1903, to Sir William Huggins, extracts of text entered into the minutes: on the necessity to raise more funds for the Antarctic Expedition in response to 'Discovery' being trapped by ice in its winter quarters. Resolved that once dispatches from R. F. Scott are received, 'Morning' should be sent to relieve the 'Discovery' and application should be made to Government for additional funds. A committee to be formed to carry forward the work. 5. Letter from E. W. D. Ward, Military Education Division, War Office, 68 Victoria Street, 3 April 1903, to the Secretary, the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: on the formation of an Advisory Board for Military Education and requesting the nomination of a representative from the Royal Society, consideration postponed. 6. 24 June selected for the Ladies' Soiree, following objections to other dates. 7. Letter from Vernon Harcourt on the printing of lists of published papers to accompany candidates' certificates: response that the list of Harcourt's papers will be tabled in the usual way. 8. Letter from Professor H. B. Dixon inviting delegates to the centenary celebration of the publication of John Dalton's atomic theory: Sir Henry Roscoe and the Foreign Secretary nominated and an address to be prepared. 9. The son of a late Fellow requiring assistance was mentioned and referred to the Scientific Relief Committee. 10. Selection of candidates for Fellowship considered and adjourned. |
