Citation | Mr Nicholaus Struyck at Amsterdam This Gentleman who is a person very eminent in Holland for his great learning in Mathematicks, Astronomy and Political Arithmetick, being desirous of the Honour of becoming a fellow of the Royal Society and being recommended in a very Strong manner by three worthy members who know him; particularly by Mr Musschenbroek for his Skill in Mathematicks & the Doctrine of Chances, and likewise for the progress he has made in the History and Calculations of Comets, by Mr Allamand for his fame and Success in Astronomical Observations and that he is a person deserving the esteem of all who value Learning and probity; by Mr La Condamine on account of that most curious and Learned book which he has published in Low Dutch in 4to and which he Some time Since presented to this Society containing many things relating to Natural History, Mathematicks, & chronology, concerning the Motions Orbits and Periods of Comets, of the True Sise of the Earth known to the Ancients, of the Duration of Humane Life, of computing the Number of Inhabitants of Places, adding that his merits could not have failed of being known to all men of learning if his works had been published in a Language more generally understood; wee therefore concur in recommending as a Candidate for Election into this Society being Satisfied he highly deserves that honour. |
