| Citation | Distinguished for his investigations upon Crystal structure which have been carried out during the last 25 years. He established the possible existence of 230 types of crystal structure as a geometrical result of the structural homogeneity of crystalline materials, and applied to this work a highly original method quite distinct from those which were being independently applied at the same time to the same subject by Schonflies in Germany and Federow in Russia. He has studied the geometrical partitioning of homogeneous structures in its relation to chemical composition and constitution. His latest application of the geometrical results derived from the above work has led to the formation of a scheme giving a geometrical meaning to chemical constitution and to the doctrine of valency. This work is described in a paper (in conjunction tith Prof W J Pope), entitled: - 'A Development of the Atomic Theory which correlates Chemical and Crystalline Structure and leads to a Demonstration of the Nature of Valency.'
