Citation | Professor of Geology at the University of Toronto and Geologist to the Bureau of Mines of Ontario. Professor Coleman has for many years been engaged in investigating the geology and physiography of various parts of Canada, more particularly Ontario. He has also travelled widely for geological purposes in North America, Europe, and Africa. After returning from Breslau University he began his duties in 1882 as Professor of Geology at Toronto, and in 1893 he was attached to the Bureau of Mines of Ontario as Geologist, his duties in both posts having since been continuous. He has investigated the glacial and interglacial deposits around Toronto, and obtained important results which were published in a series of Reports to the British Association (1897-1900) and summarized in a paper in Journ Geol, vol ix, 1901. Among other tracts in Ontario in which he has done much laborious field work is that of the nickeliferous ores around Sudbury. The results of his researches in this district have been published in the Reports of the Bureau of Mines of Ontario, 1903-1905, and in a paper on 'The Sudbury Laccolithic Sheet' (Journ Geol, vol xv, 1907). Recently he has demonstrated the existence of glacial deposits among the oldest rocks of Canada - 'The Lower Huronian Ice Age' (Journ Geol, vol xvi, 1908). |
