Citation | Professor of Tinctorial Chemistry and Dyeing in the University of Leeds. Distinguished for his contributions to Organic Chemistry, especially in connection with the Chemistry of Colouring Matters and the general question of the relationship between Colour and Chemical Constitution. Author of the following papers: - 'Action of Zinc Ethyl on the Benzoate of Propylene Chlorhydine' (Trans Chem Soc, 1885); 'Note on the Constitution of Propylene Chlorhydine' (ibid); 'On the Relation of Diazobenzene Anilide to Amidoazobenzene' (ibid); 'On a New Series of Cotton Colouring Matters' (Journ Soc Chem Ind, 1888); 'The Isomeric Sulphonic Acids of beta-Naphthylamine' (Trans Chem Soc, 1889); 'The Constitution of Primuline and Allied Sulphur Compounds' (ibid); 'Ueber die Einwirkung von Schwefel auf Paratoluidin' (Ber Deuts Chem Gesell, 1889); 'The Diazotype Process of Photographic Dyeing and Printing' (Journ Soc Chem Ind, 1890); 'The Ortho- and Para-derivatives of Orthotoluidine' (Trans Chem Soc, 1891); 'Colour and Constitution' (Proc Chem Soc, 1896); 'Ueber die Oxydation von Paranitrotoluol-sulfosaure' (Ber Deuts Chem Gesell, 1897, 1898); 'Die Orthochinoide Structur von Safranin-und Oxazin-Thiazin-Farbstoffen' (ibid, 1899); 'Polythiosulphorine Acids of 'p'-Diamines' (with A G Perkins, Trans Chem Soc, 1903); 'The Constitution of Phenol-phthalein' (with A G Perkins, ibid, 1904); 'The Colouring Matters of the Stilbene Group' (ibid, 1904, 1906); 'Constitution der Phenol- und Hydrochinon-Phtaleinsalz' (with P E King, Ber Deuts Chem Gesell, 1906, 1907); 'Chinoide Estersalze des Fluorans' (ibid, 1908); 'The Constitution of the Salts of Phenol-phthalein and of Quinol-phthalein, a contribution to the Theory of Colour in the Group of Triphenylmethane Dyestuffs' (Journ Soc Chem Ind, 1908); 'The Relation of Colour to Constitution in the Phthaleins and Torphenylmethane Groups' (Proc Chem Soc, 1908); 'Azomethineazo-dyes' (with R N Sen Trans Chem Soc, 1910); 'Aniline-Black and Allied Compounds' (ibid). Prof Green is well known as the discoverer of 'Primuline,' the first representative of a valuable series of sulphur-containing colouring matters which have been of great service as cotton dyestuffs. His researches are considered as being amongst the most important of recent contributions to the general question of the relation between colour and chemical constitution. |
