Citation | Assistant to the Director General of Observations, India. Has published important researches, more especially on atmosperic electricity. He spent one year at Karasjok, Lapland, for carrying out continuous observations on atmospheric electricity and on the radio-activity of the air. His latest researches contain a promising theory of the origin of electricity in thunderstorms. Principal publications: 'On the Electrical Resistance of Bismuth to Alternating Currents in a Strong Magnetic Field' (Phil Mag, Ser 6, Vols 2 and 4); 'Atmospherical Radio-activity in High Latitudes' (Proc Roy Soc, Vol 73, 1904); 'Atmospheric Electricity in High Latitudes' (Phil Trans, A, Vol 205, 1905); 'The Beaufort Scale of Wind Force,' and in publications of the Meteorological Office; 'On the Electricity of Rain and its Origin in Thunderstorms' (Phil Mag,, A, Vol 209, 1909). |
