| Citation | Professor of Chemistry and Head of the Chemical Department, University of Queensland. Distinguished for his originality and skill as an experimental investigator, as the inventor of an improved method for the measurement of ionic velocities, of a micro-balance of unsurpassed sensitivity, and of other aids to research; and as the author of numerous memoirs on chemical and physico-chemical subjects. Among his published papers the following may be specially mentioned: - Five papers 'On Ionic Velocities in Aqueous Solution,' published alone or conjointly (Phil Trans and Trans Chem Soc between 1901 and 1906); Papers on 'The Halogen Hydrides as Ionizing Solvents' (conjointly) (Phil Trans, 1906); 'On the Electrolysis of Liquid Sulpher-Dioxide' (Trans Faraday Soc, 1907); 'On the Compressibilities of Vapours' (Trans Chem Soc, 1902); 'On the Vapour Densities of Carbon Compounds' (with Sir W Ramsay) (Phil Mag, 1903); 'On the Dynamics of the Reaction between Iodine and the Lower Phosphorus Acids' (Trans Chem Soc, 1907-1908); 'On a new Micro-Balance' (Proc Roy Soc, 1909); 'On a new Automatic Mercury Pump' (Phil Mag, 1910). Professor Steele has done splendid work in creating and organizing not only the chemical department at Brisbane, but also the University of Queensland. He has rendered signal service to the Empire in this respect. In July, 1915, he returned to England to be of service in the war. He joined the Department of Explosive Supply, and has rendered most valuable services in undertaking the design, erection and control of large and important works. |
