Citation | Consulting and Analytical Chemist. Distinguished for his knowledge of chemistry and for his original investigations tending to advance the accuracy of analytical methods, and to improve the industries depending on fermentation. Ex-President of the Institute of Brewing and of the Society of Public Analysts. He has served on the councils of almost all the societies connected with chemistry, many of which he had been appointed to represent at the international conferences. Since the outbreakof war he has been an active member of many committees. His investigations for the Ministry of Munitions, on the production of bakers' yeast, and on the better utilization of food supplies may be cited as of special value. Of his original papers, over forty in number, the following may be specially mentioned: - 'Essential Oil of Hops' (Journ Chem Soc, 1895 and 1903); 'Some Derivatives of Humulene' (ibid, 1895); 'Action of Tartaric Acid on Tin in presence of Oxygen' (ibid, 1913); 'The Nitrogenous Constituents of Hops' (ibid, 1914); 'Spinacene a New Hydrocarbon from certain Fish Oils' (ibid 1917); 'Use of Palladium Hydrogen as Reducing Agent in Quantitative Analysis' (Analyst, 1914); 'The Calorimetric Estimation of Hydrogen Cyanide' (ibid, 1900); 'Jaffe's Calorimetric Method for the Estimation of Creatinine' (ibid, 1909); 'Examination of Chinese and Japanese Wood Oil' (ibid, 1912); 'The Volatile Bye-products of Fermentation' (Journ Inst Brewing, 1897); 'Wild Yeast Infection' (ibid, 1904); 'Hop Tannin' (1907 and 1909); 'Reproduction of Yeast in Copper Fermenting Vessels' (ibid, 1909). |
