Citation | Professor of Organic Chemistry. Distinguished for his researches in organic chemistry. Author of more than 50 papers in the Journal of the Chemical Society dealing mainly with the constitution of the natural colouring matters and of the alkaloids. The following may be specially mentioned : - 'The Constitution of Brazilin and Haematoxylin' (1908); 'Brazilein, Haematein and their derivatives ' (1908); 'The Constitution of Trimethylbrazilein a- and beta-Anhydrotrimethyl-brazilone and the Corresponding Haematoxylin Derivatives' (1909); 'Experiments on the Constitution of the Aloins' (1909); 'Synthesis of Cotarnic Acid' (1909); 'Strychnine and Berberine' (1910); 'Synthesis of Nitro-gnoscopine' (1910); 'Synthesis and Resolution of Gnoscopine' (1911); 'Iso-narcotine' (1912); 'Harmine and Harmaline' (1912-1913); 'The Mechanism of Benzoin Synthesis' (1913); 'Synthesis of beta-gnoscopine' (1914); 'Mechanism of the Alkylation of Ethyl Aceto-acetate' (1916); ' A Theory of the Mechanism of the Phyto-chemical Synthesis of Alkaloids' (1917); 'A Synthesis of Iso-brazilein (1918). Has been actively engaged during the war on investigations on the preparation of drugs, particularly of beta-eucaine hydrochloride, and on the problems submitted by the Chemical Warfare Committee. |
