| Citation | President, Institution Civil Engineers, 1924-1925; Chairman, Works Committee for preservation of St Paul's Cathedral and responsible for design and execution of necessary work thereon. Engineer for design new Mersey Tunnel, largest sub-aqueous tunnel in the world (44 feet diameter), also for design and construction new High Level Bridge, Newcastle-on-Tyne, largest single arch span in Britain. Responsible for design and construction of many miles of Tube Railway under London; was Engineer in charge for first tube named the City and South London, begun about 1887, during the construction of which compressed air was used for tunnelling for the first time in this country. Responsible for Southwark Bridge and for widening Blackfriars Bridge and many other bridges. During War, on Committee reporting on construction of Camps in England and capital expenditure of Factories on war products; visited war front on flooding and other questions. |
