Title | Lennard-Jones, Sir John Edward: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse. Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for researches on gas-theory, crystal statics, and molecular structure. Has developed formulae for the viscosity and the equation of state of gases (simple or mixed) composed of molecules that repel at short distances and attract at greater distances. Has thus obtained consistent values of the molecular forces between like and unlike molecules, particularly for the inert gases. Has applied these to detemine the sizes of unit cells in polar crystals. Has also written on cohesion at crystal surfaces; the distribution of electrons in a metal; the electronic structure of molecules; and the perturbation theory of quantum mechanics. |
