Description | Date stamp on reverse. Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches on the chemistry of natural products. Author and co-author of some sixty papers on carbohydrates and Vitamin-C. Was the first to determine the six-atom ring structure of a sugar (xylose, 1923). Allocated, jointly with Haworth, the pyranose structure to glucose, galactose, fructose, and established the constitution of sucrose, and other disaccharides (1925-1927). Published many papers on the constitution of polysaccharides including (independently) the molecular structure and chain-length of amylose and amylopectin (1932). Determined the constitution of Ascorbic acid (1933) and has also (jointly with others) synthesised this important natural product (JCS, 1933, p1419). |
