Citation | Distinguished for researches on Coal and Coal Measures. By maps and the stratigraphical correlation of selected coal-seams has elucidated the complicated structure of the South Lancashire Coalfield. His work on the chemistry and on the microscopic structure of coal, and especially on the plant tissues contained in it, is a most important contribution to our understanding of its nature. In Northumberland and Durham has made new studies of the tectonics of the North Pennine Chain. Has worked on the Old Red Sandstone of Scotland, on China Clay, on Permian Footprints, and the anatomy of Carboniferous and other fossil plants. |
