Title | Mott, Sir Nevill Francis: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse |
Citation | Distinguished for applications of quantum mechanics particularly to scattering problems. Was first to show that Rutherford's scattering law holds in quantum mechanics (Proc Roy Soc, 118) and to give accurate theory of polarization of electron beams by double scattering (Proc Roy Soc, 135) and of the effect of symmetry in scattering problems (Proc Roy Soc, 125, 126). Developed (with H M Taylor) theory of internal conversion of gamma-rays, thus discriminating between dipole and quadripole transitions (Proc Roy Soc, 138, 139, 142). Has recently worked on properties of metals including liquids (Proc Roy Soc, 146, Camb Phil Soc 30, Phys Soc London 46). Is author of important monographs: (1) An outline of Wave Mechanics, Cambridge, 1930; (2) The Theory of Atomic Collisions (with H S W Massey), Oxford, 1933; (3) Wellenmechanik u Kemphysik, Geiger Scheel Handbuch der Physik, 1933. The last two are standard expositions in their own fields. |
