Title | Plaskett, Harry Hemley: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches in solar, stellar and nebular spectroscopy and spectrophotometry. Was the pioneer in the fundamental field of the quantitative investigation of the physical nature of the O-type stars and originated their generally-accepted spectral classification. Successfully applied the wedge-method to the determination of the continuous spectra of the sun and stars, and obtained the standard value of the sun's colour-temperature. Besides extensive studies of planetary nebulae, determined the complete behaviour of the Mg 'b' lines over the sun's disc and so evaluated various physical quantities for the sun's reversing layer. His work is characterised by originality of method, selection of difficult problems, observation skill, extreme accuracy and fruitful analysis of results. |
