Citation | Smith's Prize, 1927; Adam's Prize, 1934. Distinguished for his work on Mathieu functions, and on turbulence and boundary layer theory in fluid motion. He was the first to give practical methods for evaluating the Mathieu functions for any values of the parameters, and successfully applied them to the oscillations of water in rotating elliptic lakes. He has introduced promising new methods into the extremely difficult problem of determining whether steady motions of viscous fluids are stable or unstable. He has discussed how the wake behind a body in a stream of fluid changes as the distance down-stream from the body increases. He has recently calculated the distributions of mean velocity that result from various theories of turbulent motion, and has compared them with observation. In Aeronautics he has made a considerable improvement in the theory of airscrews. |
