Citation | Distinguished for researches on transport of organic substances and salts in plants, and for relevant anatomical investigations. Starting in 1914 upon the Musci, and after the War, upon Syringa and Galanthus, he continued the investigation in Tropics upon cassava lime, yam, oil-palm and cotton. Upon the last, in collaboration with E J Maskell, and later, with E Phyllis, he has established in a notable series of papers, that the phloem is the channel of transport for carbohydrates and nitrogenous compounds. He has also studied the transport of phosphorus, potassium and calcium and certain diseases of the cotton plant. He has a wide knowledge of African and other plants of economic importance in the tropics. |
