| Citation | Distinguished for his researches on the physiology of insects. His work is characterised by originality of outlook and ingenuity of technique. Especially notable are his papers on digestion and on the formation of the peritrophic membrane; on tracheal respiration; on excretion and water conservation; and on the corpora allata and factors controlling ecdysis, metamorphosis and reproduction.
