Title | Beer, Sir Gavin Rylands De: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on the Embryology of Vertebrates. His studies on the development of the head of Squalus, Heterodontus, Amia and other vertebrates (QJMS, 1922-1926) have helped much to elucidate the morphological relations of the parts of the head-region. His detailed accounts of the development of the skull of Scyllium, Torpedo, Salmo, Lacerta, Sorex, Lepus (with J H Woodjer) and Ornithorhynchus form a valuable series of original contributions remarkable for completeness and accuracy. They fill many gaps in knowledge, and mark an important advance. Mention may also be made of his books on 'The Pituitary Body,' 1926; 'Vertebrate Zoology,' 1928; 'Experimental Embryology' (with J S Huxley), 1934; clear expositions containing original work. Particularly important is his comprehensive monograph on 'The Development of the Vertebrate Skull,' 1937, founded on his personal observations. |
