Title | Darlington, Cyril Dean: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse |
Citation | Dr Darlington is head of the Cytology Department in the John Innes Horticultural Institution. His work has been directed to elucidating the conditions determining the movement of the chromosomes in the cell, both in plants and animals. His observations on the pairing and segregation of the chromosomes lead to the conclusion that crossing-over is the essential condition of the process and its co-extensive with sexual reproduction. Meisis is distinguished from mitosis in the timing relationships; the forces under which the chromosomes move in all stages of their history are mechanically consistent, notwith-standing their different genetic effects. His hypotheses are exercising great influence upon cytological thought. |
