Title | Trueman, Sir Arthur Elijah: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Professor of Geology in the University of Glasgow. Distinguished for his researches on the stratigraphy and palaeontology of the Carboniferous and Jurassic Systems. His studies of the Lamellibranchs of the Coal Measures have made possible the identification and correlation of coal seams- a result of considerable economic importance; this work has led to a scheme of zoning which applies to all British coalfields and facilitates comparison with those of Europe (Quart J Geol Soc Lond, 1927-37). His work on the Lias of Lincolnshire, the Cardiff district, Glamorgan, and the Mendip area throws light on problems of sedimentation and tectonics. In palaeontology he has dealt with Ammonites, Gasteropods and 'Gryphaea', and with subjects of general biological interest. Author of 'The Scenery of England and Wales', 1938, 'An introduction to Geology', 1938. |
