| Citation | Government chemist. Distinguished for his knowledge and work in general chemistry, and in particular for the application of physical methods to the elucidation of problems of structure of chemical substances, and to the discovery of new chemical processes and methods at the Government Laboratory. Thus he has discovered the structure of alkaloids from ultra-violet absorption spectra and is engaged on similar work on organic ehters and esters. He has investigated the infra-red spectra of ammonia, phosphine and arsine (see Proc Roy Soc) and of diamond (Phil Trans, 1934 and Proc Roy Soc, 1936) and of hydroxy-bodies (Proc Roy Soc, 1937), the absorption of CH2 groups at 3 p (Proc Roy Soc, 1938), quinoline and isoquinoline at 3 p (J Chem Soc. 1939) and the dielectric constant and refractivity of gases at different pressures, relation between force constants, internuclear disrances and dissociation energy (J Chem Soc. 1938, 1939). He also represents the Government laboratory and the Chemiacal Society on various bodies, official and scientific. |
