Citation | Regius Professor of Botany, University of Edinburgh; Regius Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh; King's Botanist in Scotland; Hon Professor of Botany, Royal Horticultural Society. Curator of Herbarium, Royal Botanic Gardens, Calcutta, 1907-08. Explored vegetation of Sikkim and Tibet-Nepalese frontier 1908-9. Distinguished as a taxonomist and plant geographer, especially as regards the genera Primula, Rhododendron and Lilium. His papers on Primula form an exhaustive monograph. His "Hooker" lecture to the Linnean Society in "Some aspects of the bearing of cytology on taxonomy" was an important contribution to cyto-genetics. Has published about 70 papers.
