Title | Allen, John Frank: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his discovery of new phenomena in the flow of liquid helium II. With R Peierls and M. Zaki Uddin, and later with A D Misener, he showed that a flow of heat through liquid helium II produces a flow of the fluid in the opposite direction. This was best shown in experiments on the "fountain effect". Other experiments on flow through very fine capillaries showed the superfluid properties of liquid helium II. Dr. Allen had previously worked in Toronto on superconductivity phenomena in alloys. During the years 1939 - 1944, Dr. Allen made distinguished contributions to the study of stresses and vibration in shells and guns. |
