Title | Brambell, Francis William Rogers: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for researches in Zoology and particularly for extensive contributions to our knowledge of the reproductive cycle and related phenomena in the Mammalia. In addition, he has done valuable work in the fields of Marine Zoology, Cytology and Embryology. Amongst his publications may be specially mentioned: (1) A series of papers (with Parkes and Fielding) on the oestrous cycle of the Mouse, memoirs (alone and with his pupils) on reproduction in Voles and Shrew which opened up new ground and a detailed account of reproduction in the Wild Rabbit of outstanding importance as a pioneer study of the phenomena of prenatal mortality in a wild species. (2) Detailed studies on the development of the gonads in the Mouse and on the foetal membranes in the Shrews. (3) A description of a new species of Enteropneusta which he was the first to observe and which is of great phylogenetic interest. Author of an excellent text-book on the Development of Sex in Vertebrates (1930). List of publications appended. |
