Title | Bennet-Clark, Thomas Archibald: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for researches in plant physiology. His earlier work with H.H. Dixon was concerned chiefly with the responses of plant cells to electric currents and the properties of oil-water emulsions in relation to the properties and structure of the plasmatic membrane. His main researches have dealt with the metabolism of succulent plants. This work has greatly enlarged our views on the part played by organic acids in plant metabolism and the mechanism of respiration in plants. More recently he has carried out investigations on the water relations of plant cells the results of which have been described in a series of papers which have called in question the adequacy of commonly accepted views and have opened up fresh lines of enquiry. |
