Title | Gates, Sidney Barrington: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Mr. Gates has been a pioneer in the scientific study of the dynamics of aircraft, particularly in relation to control and stability, and is internationally recognised as a leading authority on this subject. His work on the spinning of aircraft is of special value and has been largely responsible for the cessation of spinning accidents. He modern practical and theoretical treatments of longitudinal stability and control are largely based on his work, and he has initiated the modern quantitative study of aircraft manoeuvrability. Throughout his career he has been intimately concerned with experiments in flight related to his theoretical work. |
