Title | Howarth, Leslie: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Dr Howarth was the first to calculate the positions at which the flow in the boundary layer separates near an elongated body in a fluid stream, and the relationship between these positions and the lift force. After writing five papers on this and related subjects he worked on isotropic turbulence with v. Karman, with whom he wrote a paper fundamental in the subject. He has written other papers on turbulent motion including one explaining secondary flow in straight non-circular pipes. During the war Howarth made important unpublished contributions to ballistics. Recently he has written on the flow of compressible fluids. |
