Title | Smith, David Macleish: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | In 1938, Dr Smith undertook the further prosecution of the early Farnborough researches on gas turbines with axial compressors. As a result he evolved the Beryl, the first British jet engine with an axial compressor. Further work on the same lines is still on the secret list. In the field of marine engineering he has provided the power plant for the only gas turbine driven ship which has yet put to sea. Dr. Smith's scientific papers include an important contribution to the theory of the stability of heavy rotating elastic bodies. |
