Title | Barker, John: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished in the field of Plant Physiology for studies on respiration and carbohydrate metabolism in plants. His results elucidate the complex of factors controlling respiration and he has advanced an interpretation of the effects of low temperature on metabolism particularly on the accumulation of sugars induced in starchy tissues. He has recently investigated the formation and consumption of ascorbic acid with a view to elucidating its role in plant metabolism. He has applied the results of fundamental studies to investigations on storage and overseas transport of fruit and on the preservation of plant products by freezing and drying. |
