Title | Frankel, Sir Otto Herzberg: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Dr. Frankel is one of the leading plant breeders of the World. He not only produced a theory of yield improvement, and tested it experimentally (1947b), but has used it to raise wheats with increased yield (1941, 1948a) and a wheat in which both yield and quality were improved (1948b). His work on Triticum is the first to suggest the occurance of directed spontaneous mutation (1950a). Frankel's combination of cytological study with plant breeding enabled him to discover a new type of inheritance, the self propagating duplication, to advance the understanding of meiosis and of the complex systematics of many plant genera. |
